OMG – it’s so warm! Take advantage of our week-long warm spell, perfect for snowshoeing up to Bourgeau Lake – just a 30 minute drive from Canmore. Go west on the TransCanada Hwy, past Mt. Norquay and continue west for 13 km. Look for the Bourgeau Lake hike sign for the trailhead parking lot on the south (left) side of the highway. This 7.5 km (4.7 mi) one-way trail has an moderate elevation gain of 725 m (2,330 ft) to a small pristine alpine lake nestled in the mountains above the Bow Valley – a lovely setting for a sunny winters day picnic before retracing your steps on the well marked trail. Allow about 6 hours roundtrip. Enjoy! (here is a summer description of the trail too fyi) Note: a Banff park day pass applies.
If you’re in the area this weekend, think about taking a trip up to Lake Louise to either skate on the lake or enjoy a x-country ski on the many track-set trails in the area. Then, take in the amazing ice sculptures at the beautiful Chateau Lake Louise. If you’re bringing the kids, let them create their own ice creations during the “Little Chippers” ice festival event. Whatever you do, there’s tons of fresh new snow everywhere and the weather is looking good so get out there! >D
Thursday January 26th is Australia Day! We wish all Australians visiting or working here in our fine valley a very happy day! And, if you hadn’t heard, Lake Louise Ski Resort is hosting a big party for you up there tomorrow. Should be fun. G’day mates!
Well then, you should check out the Paintbox Lodge’s new cooking class offerings! Ever eaten at The TroUgh here in town? Well, George Bayne, former head chef at the TroUgh Dining Co, is now running demonstration-style cooking classes. George specializes in eclectic organic cuisine. This should be fun as George prepares culinary delights and you enjoy the wonderful meal afterwards. Classes will involve learning about knife skills, sauce and stock making, presentation, salads and vegetable preparation. Book soon! They’re filling up.
It’s positively balmy outside (-10C right now feels great after -36C all week) so grab your gear and go experience the area this weekend! A couple of ideas to keep you busy…… try night skiing at Mt. Norquay tonight – the park riders will love the terrain park with 15 cms of new snow. Afterwards, head to the lounge upstairs in the lodge - they serve fabulous nachos. Or, save your visit to enjoy Mt. Norquay’s “World Snow Day” celebrations this Sunday – don’t miss the new Belgian Waffle Hut for a taste of fresh, hot, delicious waffles made by Canmore entrepreneur (Belgian ex-pat) Pascale Wanlin – yummy! A snowshoe up to Chester Lake would be ideal. Or, try kiteboarding up on the Spray Lakes (Spray Lakes/Smith Dorrien Road) and park just past the Sparrow Hawk picnic area) as it should be windy the weekend. Whatever you do….enjoy!
Good chilly day to visitors to the Bow Valley! Incase you’re wondering what to do when it’s this cold, here’s a few ideas: visit Canmore’s Museum and Geoscience Centre located in our Town Hall. Open Noon to 5pm Mon-Fri, the museum is a great way to learn about Canmore’s vibrant mining and pioneering past. Head over to The Georgetown Inn and grab a table by their roaring fireplace to enjoy Canmore’s #1 halibut fish ‘n chips for lunch or dinner. A drive into Banff might also fill a day, visiting the Banff Park National Museum, The Buffalo Nations Museum and The Whyte Museum. Stay warm! >D
Yes Trekkie fans…..rejoice! William Shatner is coming to Banff/Sunshine Village along with a whole whack of stars this coming weekend Jan 13-14th)! So don your favourite Trek gear and come out to cheer him on up at Sunshine this Friday and Saturday (also, I just got back from another stellar ski day at Sunshine – snowed all day and more to come this week!!!). If you’re feeling rich, take in the Waterkeeper Alliance fundraiser dinner ($500 per person) at the Banff Springs and maybe you’ll sit with Alec Baldwin or one of the gang while supporting a great cause. Now, where did my tribble costume go ……….
